Warrington d/Deaf residents share their experiences of Local Trust
Utilising the Warrington Deaf Centre and its members, along with Signing Solutions we were able to speak to the Deaf community in a place where they felt comfortable and have qualified British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters on hand to hear the patient's views and feedback to us exactly what they wanted to say.
Healthwatch Warrington analysed the data and listened to the views of patients and collated them to create the report. This is an independent report and using the feedback from those d/Deaf patients we made recommendations based on this.
Deaf Awareness
12 million people in the UK are deaf or have hearing loss. It’s important to ask people what you can do to make communication easier.
The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) have some tips on how you can be more Deaf aware in your day to day life.
One of the main barriers the d/Deaf community face is difficult to process written text, as it is technically a whole different language from British Sign Language. When there is a barrier between those who do not sign, their first reaction is to write it down- a huge 94% of those we spoke to needed help reading letters.
Read the report in full to see what Warrington and Halton Hospital Trust have said about the findings and how they are planning on making changes.
Sign Health the provider of BSL interpreters for Warrington & Halton Hospital Trust have responded to the report, you can read their response here.
